Pentrex announces a New DVD Release – DOUBLESTACKS OVER DONNER Pentrex traveled to Donner Pass in the winter of 2009-2010, spending several weeks to capture the revitalized action that can now be found on the Roseville Subdivision. The Union Pacific had just finished a 12-month project to increase the clearances in 15 tunnels and snow sheds on Donner Pass so that doublestack trains could again be routed over this crossing of the Sierra Nevada range. Southern Pacific once ran doublestacks over Donner Pass but as larger containers with extra height evolved, its successor, Union Pacific, had been compelled to route its container trains over the Feather River Canyon instead, and traffic on Donner declined to a trickle of its former intensity. However, in 2008, UP decided it would be worth the cost to raise the roof on the shorter, faster line to expedite delivery of intermodal freight by several hours when compared to the more lengthy transit of the former Western Pacific line. As a result, traffic is now flowing over Donner in abundance! Youll see types of trains showcased here: grain trains, fruit trains, auto trains, general freight, and Amtraks California Zephyr. Well show them battling the stiff grades and serpentine curves that railroaders face on Donner. The spotlight, however, is on the enormous doublestack trains, some of them up to 9000 feet long! Once again, the sounds of laboring diesels hauling containers by the hundreds echo off the granite walls of this …

YOU ARE BEST!!!
HAHAHA!! 4:26
massive !
That’s good to hear about Donner pass now UP needs to up grade Tennessee pass and UP will have it made
@C60AC Look!!!! Its George Patton!!! Geroge Patton’s dad Troy is so old he could have fought it the Civil War!!! Fuck Damn!!!
Besides the tunnel clearances to allow doublestack trains through Donner Pass, UP will be starting to put back some of the double track that SP removed from Donner back in the mid-90s when they were using the existing rails and ties to double track the Sunset Route in Arizona and New Mexico
@trainboy94 Get the facts straight, kiddo! Be an informed railfan, not a fan who doesn’t know jack.
@meccaturbo You know what do you just want me to kill myself is this why you ant to ruin my hobby ya thanks
@meccaturbo And like I said, your opinion means very little…you’re just a railfan who likes a certain route and argues from that point. I have 2 close friends who work for a major railroad, as machinists in their loco shop. Locomotives are brought in to the shop on a time basis (number of days of service), not on a fictitious “strain” basis. UP uses Donner for a good reason. Shorter route means more customer sensitive service.
@trainboy94 Bottom line, dude, you don’t work for a railroad. Two of my close friends work at CSX’s Cumberland Locomotive Shop, and they’ve explained to me in great detail what wears a locomotive out. There is no such thing as “strain” the way you’ve defined it. Locomotives are run below their maximum breaking point, and when a high grade line is encountered, more locos are put on a train, effectively balancing the load of all of them. It’s not all about money – it’s about customer schedules
@meccaturbo Lets think about this, more power means more fuel what used to be a train that two units could handle now takes 6, more fuel for that train to go over Donner, where if the train went through the Canyon there is less money spent on fuel, less chance of a freezing engine block, and less chance of stalling
@trainboy94 Suffice it to say, Union Pacific knows a lot more about this subject than you do, otherwise they wouldn’t be running new business over Donner.
@trainboy94 Dude, you obviously don’t know anything about trains…you’re just a railfan, not someone who works for a railroad.
@meccaturbo no strain is much worse
@trainboy94 That is simply not true. And besides, they use more locos on Donner, so the strain is not more anyway. Runtime wears out locos just as much as strain does.
@meccaturbo Ya less run hours but more strain, strain is worse than runtime
@trainboy94 Not true. The equipment runs less time (less run hours) on Donner.
Donner???? More efficient???? HA!!!!!!!!! There are more wear and tear on the units going through Donner then there are the Canyon
Pentrex, when are you going to start producing DVD’s in Blu-ray?I love your videos and have many of them. But i’m spoiled now that Blu-ray will be the standard for all my future train DVD’s.Standard definition is a thing of the past.
Doublestack trains over Donner Pass? Upgrades to the entire line? Now that is rather unusual.
Very impressive
If you look at Feather River compared to Donner trains have to go almost into Oregon before they get a chance to even go east.
Donner is more direct then Feather River even though it is higher then Feather River.
Feather River would eventually take you into way northern Nevada which is almost off the beaten path for some of those trains if they have to go south.
I have the original SP video so it is great to see this pass get respect again.
@trainkids Dude, Donner always was busy. It’s definitely not a good thing that this has happened.
@NS6677 Bullshit. Do some research on FRC buddy. Donner sucks.
@trainboy94 Cool, I remember that but didn’t realize SP ran stackers early on as well.
@crazyrailfan Ah ok, I always thought the ISO containers were always the same height over the years!
@trainkids Heavy haulers, manifests and grain trains will dominate the FRC as well as the 4 daily BNSF trains.
